Do Muslims really want to go "back to the future"?

I have heard that many Muslims believe that their cultural and economic stagnation is a result of their departing from the essential message of Islam in the Middle Ages. Is it really a widespread belief (among the educated Muslims) that a reversion to a more fundamental application of Islam would result in their being better able to live productively in modern times?
