Can't connect my ipod touch to the internet?

Just received this fab new toy today (2nd generation 16gb ipod touch). Got connected up with my home BT wi-fi no problem, but I can't connect to the internet.... try to go into the Apps Store but it says 'can't connect to internet'.... try to go into itunes and get message 'can't connect to internet'. What am I doing wrong?
